Another cut-and-paste Perfidy!!

Not too long ago I had to sort out a case of  'pilfering' of my personal photograph/images from my blog  AnaksiHamid.

See : https://anaksihamid.blogspot.com/2016/05/a-malay-malady-episode-2.html

.This cover of the spouse's book "Fatimah's Kampung" ......

....... had been corrupted into this .... by a  Homestay business in Malim Nawar.

Aaaah, this is quite a demonstration of  business acumen for we 'lazy, indolent and unenterprising' Malays!   But in this beloved land of ours, worse has been done in the name of  'entrepreneurship' and audacious money-making.  In Malayan history, there have been many such people - petty-minded Malay wannabe businessmen too busy with their own little egos to challenge the incomers and make the Peninsula a world of their own and a world to be proud of.   It's truly a shame.

I was quite fortunate to discover that deceitful little gem during my wanderings on the Internet five years ago.  I am certain there are many more cases of pilfering and intrusions into my Blog and countless other sites.  After all, this is 21st century Malaysia/Singapore.  Integrity and probity lie very low on the ground, especially when aided by sophisticated technology and its highly qualified practitioners.

Many of my readers (both past and present), it seems, like my earlier postings about the stories of AsH growing up in the kampung (I spell it 'kampung' and not the Colonial affectation of 'kampong') in Singapore, like Kampung Chantek and Kampung Abu Kassim.  I have included in these postings some of the vast collection of my beloved Abah's black and white photographs which recorded lovingly his and his family's happy life.   In appreciation of his (and my mother's) life and love, I decided to  narrate in this blog the memoir of a Malay family in mid 20th century Singapore.  I was also impelled by the desire of my father's grandchildren  to learn more about their grandparents and parents as well.  I guess I was quite blissfully unaware of the growing trend and pecuniary interests of the Nostalgia Industry - especially in the city-state of Singapore, which has demolished the vast bulk of its heritage in the name of progress and economic development.  A land with virtually no tangible signs left of its non-colonial history can only resort and cling to the vestiges to be found in old books, documents and - especially - photographs.

For instance, while the spouse and I were wandering around Leicestershire in the late 1980s we discovered in a little stamp shop this unbelievable Postcard of old Singapore, dated 25 May 1912.

Malay Shop Singapore - The name 'Albert' inserted on the card must have been written by either Albert in Darjeeling or his Grand Pa in Calcutta.  There must be a sweet story behind this communication between a young boy and his grandfather.

It was priced at £2.75 which was equivalent to about 2 return bus trips from our house to Leicester City Centre!

We went to Singapore just a few years later, and in an  upmarket Bookshop selling antiquarian books and nostalgia at Tanglin Shopping Centre, a postcard of almost similar age and condition as ours was priced at SGD$50 (late 1980s) !

I guess I'm beginning to sound like the typical Singaporean, obsessed with the query of "How much?".

I'm afraid the spouse and I are also obsessed - with our affection for old things that remind us of our growing up years.  That includes books, postcards, comics, annuals, embroidery, vinyls, typewriters, gramophones and more books and postcards.  We often joke about how we have to part with them one day, to pay for a hip operation or a brain transplant!

They are a precious collection just like those much loved black and white photographs that my Abah left behind.  He did not leave us a legacy of land, property, business holdings, stocks and shares and antique cars.     Just those photographs, happy memories, and a good education.     These are not the sort of things we would sell for a hip operation.    These are my most personal nostalgia, my most personal heritage, my history and identity.      They are not for sale.     They are not to be abused by people for their own pecuniary and self-serving designs.

So where is all this leading?     Well, a few days ago,my brother Mus passed on this link to me from YouTube titled Part 2 Lost Kampongs in Singapore.

I - Click on this video and at 0.01 you will find this picture at Figure 1

Figure 1 - This photo by my father had been coloured and defaced and abused.

Figure 5 - My map of Kampung Abu Kassim

II.  Click on the above video at 2.27 and you will find this picture at Figure 6.

Figure 6 - This photograph belonging to my father had also been desecrated like Figure 1, but in a very despicable way.

Firstly:  Sarafian Salleh, the provider of the said YouTube video, a Singaporean Malay and an Australian University graduate in Mechanical Engineering who I had previously never heard of, has appropriated this photograph as his - by inserting his name in the image (see the yellow rectangle).     But this image has been and always will be a photograph taken by my father - a Minang man by the name of Abdul Hamid bin Jala.    It was not taken by, and has never been in the possession of, Sarafian Salleh.... or his father Incik Salleh......or anybody else on this planet.

So this photograph was never in the keeping of Sarafian Salleh and his family.  It is a photograph treasured and lovingly looked after by Maznoor binti Abdul Hamid (AsH) and her mother Kamisah binti Suboh since 1949 when AsH was just five years old.

Who,by the way,  is Sarafian Salleh?

Sarafian Salleh also goes into my my blog, signs up as a Follower, then he vandalises and filches my family photographs to promote his image as a guardian of Singapore's 'nostalgia' especially that of the Malays.  That's entrepreneurship par excellence that is reputed to be a feature of Singapore's success.

Secondly, Lorong Abu Hassan (the yellow elliptical shape) is a name that, as far as I know, does not exist at Pasir Panjang. It is quite laughable had it had not been for the fact that this video is so abjectly grimy.

Now let's check Abdul Hamid's original photographs.

1.  https://anaksihamid.blogspot.com/2017/06/a-hari-raya-enhanced-by-singaporeans.html

Figure 7 - The Selamat Hari Raya Banner  and the Two Stars were drawn and made by Abdul Hamid, by my Abah's loving and hard work.

2.  https://anaksihamid.blogspot.com/2013/08/vestiges-of-hari-raya-and-kampung.html

Figure 8 - The clothes on the washing line (to the right) certainly belong to Kamisah's family and nobody else in Singapore or in any other part of the Nusantara.

Figure 9 - Enough said!

Conclusion

When I clicked on that "Part 2 Lost Kampong" video by Sarafian Salleh, I could not believe my eyes.  The brazen plagiarism and appropriation of my family photographs are quite appalling.  As I watched it right to the end, I noticed that credit was given to various names, sources and organisations for the use of their images.

Figure 11

But there was no mention or reference to Anaksihamid.blogspot.com .

My response ranged from anger to disgust to contempt.

How very Singaporean I thought.  How very Singaporean-Malay, I shuddered,

In Malaysia I had to deal with a  Homestay kampung-entrepreneur who purloined lock, stock and barrel the spouse's book cover of Fatimah's Kampung'.

However this video by Sarafian Salleh takes the cake for another reason.     It reveals a kind of 'electronic' chicanery which one would expect had long been wiped out in an efficient, hardworking, enterprising, smart and clean Singapore.

Sikap gaya alah sayang pendekar putri.

Bertepok tangan amboi tangan, tanda berani.

Tiada gentar alah sayang, hai membela diri,

Addendum

I hate to have to post such a posting - yet again.  Seperti meludah ke langit.  (It's like spitting at the sky).

Meanwhile, in a nation just south of Malaya (a small City-State where most of the population are descendants of settlers and colonists from the Middle Kingdom of China) the rules were slightly different.    Here, the celebrations for the Year of the Ox during the Covid-19 Pandemic had already been carefully drawn up by January 26th 2021, by the PAP-led Government  that had been ruling the country since its Independence.

PS   Wee Meng Chee's CV.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another PS. Sorry.

Is 2021 the Year of the Ox or the Year of the Cow?  It seems both are acceptable. According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Cow symbolizes an animal with a gentle nature associated with Buddha. The Ox on the other hand, represents a diligent and dependable personality.

There is however a difference between a cow (lembu betina  in Malay) and an ox (lembu jantan).

The West is quite categorical about the difference.

Finally, whatever the day, whatever the Celebration, keep well and safe and healthy for the sake of our loved ones, our Rakyat, especially the Frontliners, and our Nation.

Abide with the SOP.

Renegade to Hero.

Malaysia, whatever you do, please, please do not ban this book.

Especially  I beg of my Malay Muslims, young and old to not go the way of this  "Tukang Karut"  (a terminology used by M. Nasir)

Like Salman Rushdie, you will turn him into a hero.

You will give credence and validity to his  "Wild" accusations, innuendoes and his mendacity.

You will turn your Bangsa into Melayu Bangsat, Pengecut and  Katak di bawah Tempurung.

Think of your Heritage.  Not too long ago, your forefathers fought the Japanese and the Malayan Communist Party and so we live in the present country we now have - not totally of our own making and of our choice, but that is all we have and so far we have done a pretty good job.

If we ban this book, we lose our pride and dignity.

If we ban this book, the nation and the Malay-Muslims' reputation will be ground into the dirt.

THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO!!!!!

Our nation cannot live with a renegade turning into a Martyr - and a non Malay, non-Muslim martyr to boot!  We certainly must not be responsible for creating and thus  sanctifying St Tommy Thomas.

Furthermore, as Aesop wrote.

The shaft of the arrow had been feathered with one of the eagle's own plumes.

[We often give our enemies the means of our own destruction.]

Look at ourselves, our leaders and leadership. We have the "musuh dalam selimut dan luar selimut". Another enemy (several of our own people), stand beside us providing the  blanket stored in our cupboard.

Let TT and his publisher and his sponsors and masters  keep this book, its profit and other gains.

Don't succumb to this "momok momok"  (again from M Nasir) that thrives in our nation.

So please give Tommy Thomas enough rope to hang himself.

READ, and learn the nature of his game.

Sauce for the Goose and Sauce for the Gander - Kong Hee Fatt Choy

 The Gander snarls  .....

Mr Lim's displeasure.

The Goose reminisces .....

But "the goose is cooked".  (It's an idiom meaning "the good times are over".)  Thanks to Covid 19.

One of the the caretakers in the Kitchen explains.....

Ash reckons .....

If only Hari Raya had been on February 12, 2021,  we could have had our celebration at the Pasar Malam or the Car Wash or at the Barbershop too!  Furthermore, there would be an improvement in hairstyle for all Malaysians!  And, this time, the B40s, the employees and their Taukehs would have been able to earn and bring home a bit more 'lui'  (money in Hokkien) for the family to celebrate an auspicious occasion.

Besides (and before Covid 19), Malaysians in Malaysian Malaysia have already been afflicted by another Virus, this time from the West - a virulent global bug known as Victimitis and MeTooitis.  It has developed most especially among the comfortable (and more 'civilised') urban denizens.  It is an offshoot of the Human Rights Crusade.  Unlike the invisible virus of Covid 19, this one is very, very conspicuous and in-your-face.

Everybody and anybody can put on the mantle of Victimhood.  But nobody wants to talk about their blessings or their responsibilities - only their self-entitlement.

Finally, as an anak jati Semenanjung Tanah Melayu, I hold my head in my hands and I fall back in despair of my heritage.

I am standing with one foot in the grave.

Get Cracking Malaysia!!

Heavens to Betsy, OMG, Goodness Gracious Me!!!!!!

This will not do Malaysia.

13 January 2021 -  Declaration of  the return of the MCO.

14 January - Heavens forbid. An Emergency was announced by the Paramount Ruler.  We are seeing the death of democracy and freedom in this country. 👎 Bring out the black flag (and maybe the yellow T-Shirts?), get the Petitions going, 👊 especially if you see yourself as the Saviours (Hallelujah) and guardians  of the Rakyat's Free Spirit (hic! hic!) and especially as you are dedicated to bringing back the Mandate given by the People in 2018.

24 January 2021 - More wailing and wringing of hands, more gloating and self-righteousness.  WOT! it has been 11 days since the MCO and the cases are still skyrocketing , now hovering at 4,000.

This will not do!   We must petition for Parliament to return, challenge the legality of this minority, backdoor Government.  We shall show them how.

So this is our plan.

LET'S HAVE AN ELECTION.

LET'S ELECT A NEW GOVERNMENT FOR A NEW (SERIES 2) MALAYSIA.

LET'S HAVE ANOTHER SABAH-STYLE ELECTION AND EXTEND IT TO THE REST OF THE NATION - BRING THE 'SABAH VIRUS' TO MALAYA.  (Remember the speech made by the Sponsor of THE VIBES in September 2020 when he said, amongst other paeans of praises to Sabah, "Malaya has an infection and Sabah/Sarawak is the antibiotic we desperately need."!!)🙏

LET'S ANOINT A NEW PRIME MINISTER :     PRIME MINISTER  TUN/TAN SRI/DATUK SERI/DATUK/DATO/ ENCIK/MR  and maybe DATIN ..xyz... THE IX.

MALAYSIA IS NOT SHORT OF AMBITIOUS WANNABES WHO, LIKE IZNOGOUD, WANT TO BE PRIME MINISTER INSTEAD OF THE PRIME MINISTER.

(Explanation for the young and deprived: When I started buying Iznogoud Comics in 1975, I never thought how apt it would be to the politics of my Tanah Air wef from 2019.

The Authors, Translators and Publisher.

Here's the rallying cry of The Great Revoluton and Struggle of the Brave People of  Malaysian Malaysia.

There are many, many Iznogouds in Malaysian Malaysia, both covert and overt. Some are blatant, some are by proxy.

And in the end, it will all come true, maybe in a few months' time, perhaps in a year, perhaps never?

I highly recommend this masterpiece as essential reading for the undergrads and lecturers in Malaysia's Institutes of  Higher Learning.  There's a video version available on YouTube for the hi-tech generation who are not accustomed to reading print (though the printed version is far superior, not tainted by the accent), for our budding young politicians and gung-ho social media personnel.

But not before Covid 19 tears this nation into shreds (especially the Rakyat)   However the ambitious, rich and powerful will survive, a sort of  culling of the weak and inefficient and unenterprising,  indolent, lazy and pursuing a deficient value system.  (Now where have I heard that before - Charles Darwin??  Naahh! Darwin's more intellectual than that.)

           ======================================

That's enough frivolity AsH.  You are getting high on your Kopi Kampung!  Let's get back to basics, to please the chorus (sometimes raucous) of disapproval about Malaysia's Peformance in controlling Covid 19.  We are not doing enough to curtail Covid 19. But tell me which country has?

As I am fortunate enough to put  my feet up to rest in two cities, Kuala Lumpur (12 years) and Leicester (36 years), let me make a comparison of some salient features of these two countries that I call my home.

Comparison of Covid Cases as on 23 Jan 2021

Population                Cases                   % of total population affected

UK                            67.88 million             3.58 million                                5.28 percent

MALAYSIA                32.7 million            176 K                                          0.538 percent

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comparison of Covid deaths as on 23 Jan 2021

                                          Cases                        Deaths                       % of deaths

UK                                   3.58 million               95,981                         2.68 per cent

MALAYSIA                    176 K                        660                               0.375 percent

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comparison of Economic Ranking

                                           Ranking                                       GDP

UK                                     6th largest in the world                $2.638 Trillion

MALAYSIA                      39th in the world                          $336 billion

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*  1 Billion  =  1000 Million

*   1 Trillion  =  1000 Billon

C'MON MALAYSIA, THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU RENEWED THE MCO AND IMPOSED THE EMERGENCY.  YOU ARE TRYING OUR PATIENCE!!!!  😡😡

Oh yes, must not forget this contribution by a Sabah researcher Dr Audrey Teh Yi Hui working in London who lamented " I'm from Malaysia where we don't have state health care and I've seen families bankrupted by medical bills."

Finally ; .........

.......  yesterday our dear friend in Leicester sent us this picture of their garden.

Jackie's and Julia's garden, Leicester 25 Jan 2021.

Jackie wrote : Yes, hope you're both ok, apart from homesick?  The Covid situation here is dire, Leicester hospitals struggling, and on the local radio they were saying they need more mortuary space.

Jackie is a retired SRN (State Registered Nurse) and Julia is still serving in Leicester's NHS.

To all the Frontliners in Leicester and Malaysia, keep up the splendid work.  We are rooting for you.
