Dear Kamal,

Two years ago I was buying lunch from a stall at Choa Chu Kang (Singapore). The young man on the other side of the counter stared at me and asked, "Cikgu Maznoor kah? Cikgu dari Yusof Ishak?"

I said yes. He smiled and said, "Cikgu ingat tak saya? Kuslan bin Lepot, Menengah 4B?

Oh yes! And my memory started clicking and we talked about the happy old times. That was 40 years ago!!

It's a wonderful feeling - to be remembered, despite all the ravages of the years.

And on a similar note, thank you for the bouquet - I hope I deserve your appreciation. That has really made my day and the best Hari Raya present ever. Your comment is worth all the late nights of thinking and writing.

Thank you, kamal a latiff.

Selamat Hari Raya from AsH and Iain to you and yours.

Salam, selamat hari raya...seronok baca cerita yang you tulis. Makes me think of home...when my dad was still around and when my mom was still strong... Time flies and kadang-kadang rasa helpless...

Dear bash,

Salam and thank you.

I fully understand your helplessness as you witness the passing of time. And especially on Hari Raya Puasa we remember our loved ones who have left us forever - the yearning never ends.

But we must make full use of today and each day - loving and caring for those that are still with us.

Have a happy Hari Raya where ever you are.

Sorry Sis, I'm still stuck with snail mail. Selamat Hari Raya to you my dears, and to Lely a special prayer. May Allah shower you all with blessings this holy month and keep you safe and well throughout the year.

PS Did you notice the spelling error in the Jawi message for Hari Raya?

Dear AG,

It's now my turn to apologise. I have not been checking my blog especially during the past week- because of very unhappy circumstance in our neighborhood - re: my latest posting.

Bless you for your doa for Lely and the 2 geriatrics. I have just spoken to Lely and she thanked you and kirim salam. We also hope and pray that Zaharah and the rest of your tribe had a healthy and happy Hari Raya.

The spelling error in the Jawi message - umhh, aah, aiyoyo. Hamba sangat segan to make this confession - Shakespeare I can quote one, but Jawi I no learn in school in colonial Singapore. Throughout my primary/secondary/ A level years I only had 2 years and 6 months of Malay language learning ( about 1 period a week), and all in Rumi. That's why I love the 'e' tanda.

One day I will have to write about this dark history of my education. But I can say "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the Plain." And the Channel 4 documentary on Islam starring Tom Holland is a load of c....p - a white version of Salman Rushdie - from a morally and economically bankrupt culture.

No? Not good enough?

Still. I'm proud of my blacan and tempoyak heritage - no one can take that away from me.

Salam and love from us both to you and the Clan.

Thank you Mus,

Shall check on your link.

I have read your latest blog but I'll comment here as I shall be referring to both.

So sad to hear of your neighbour's passing. But as He wills so shall it be. May the good professor be taken in Jannah among the solihin.

I didn't see Tim Holland's work, but my son who does history (and who watched it) says that they demolish that kind of talk quite easily in their first year at university. Tim Holland's a name I respect on his writings on Roman history but this time he is out of his depth. Probably a hatchet job with the lure of ackers. But this is their latest work. Read the last ayah in the Chapter of the Bee [16:125-8], there's comfort.

anak si-hamid said...

Thank you AG for the comment and the Chapter for comfort.

Good to know that a young Malay-Muslim in UK, (from his academic training) is able to put the likes of TH in his place.

Hopefully other Muslims living in the non-Western parts of the globe will not over-react and create more fatwas and video burning.

Perhaps this double First in English and Latin from Cambridge should restrict himself to his Herodotus and Homer, to his novels like "Supping with Panthers", "The Vampyre: Being the True Pilgrimage of ....Sixth Lord Byron" and his other short fiction and plays.

But Channel 4 is doing him a huge favour - the dream of any author - publicity for TH's latest output - "In the Shadow of the Sword: The Battle for Global Empire and the End of the Ancient World". I shall wait till this book turns up for sale in the Charity Shops or Car Boot Sales in Leicester.

Slag off Islam and the Muslims - that's one sure way to boost your ratings - both for TH and C4! After all, the media's hands in UK were tied (sounds like a bit of SM here) with regards to Prince Harry's input for 'The History of the British Royal Family'.

Fig leaves anyone?

PS No chance to watch TH's Documentary here - but thank goodness for the Internet.

Awang Goneng said...

I don't think the documentary has created the tsunami that Rushdie's work did. Perhaps Muslims have got wiser, perhaps the agents provocateur are busy at the Paralympics. I have been reading Holland's book quietly in the bookshop but seeing how sloppy his scholarship is in the documentary, I don't think I'll buy his book(s) now.

This questioning of Islam's origin and even if Muhammad existed is not new. Holland interviewed one of the revisionist historians, Patricia Crone. I recently bought a book, also in the same vein, called 'Crossroads to Islam' by two Israelis who are not historians but archaeologists (and not even prominent ones at that). In their Introduction they acknowledged the help of the beast Ibn Warraq, a professional Islam hater who was recently exposed as being in the pay of the Red Sea pedestrians. Now, writing a supposedly scholarly work about Islam and having a panel-beater as your support does look rather strange doesn't it? The book is far from convincing, making wild conclusions from unproven 'archaeological' evidence. But never mind, the sooner these disrupters are dismissed the better. Read this review of Holland's documentary by Inayat Banglawala (I'm not sure if the young man is still with the Muslim Council of Britain) and also the interesting comments to it here: http://inayatscorner.wordpress.com/2012/08/30/tom-hollands-bizarre-conjecture-about-islams-birthplace/

anak si-hamid said...

Thank you AG especially for the contacts.

Inayat Banglawala is brilliant and I've found another very useful site at IERA.

TH , from my reading, sounds as you said - sloppy. Yet I wonder why he's getting that much influence and publicity promoting someone else's agenda.

You know I wish we could just take a bus to visit you and have a jolly good rumble - the cerebral type I mean.
