Today, my dear friend Siti and a kindred spirit, sent me this video clip, amongst many others earlier; ever since the latest assault on Palestine. Forget about names like West Bank and Gaza Strip. Call a spade a spade as before 1945. It has been and will always be Palestine.
[Just like Semenanjung Tanah Melayu and not Federated Malay States, the Straits Settlements, and the Unfederated Malay States .... and many other 'creative' name plates given by the British to the Malay Peninsula.]

Siti, I hate it, I hate it. The hypocrisy and double standards of the Western/Christian/Zionist Lobby is despicable.
There are people much younger than us today who will find this atrocious and unacceptable, and will dedicate themselves to giving voice to the powerless and afflicted.
But 30 to 40 years from now, I dearly hope they will not end up like me (and Iain if he is still with us today), holding their heads in their hands and crying out, " Why? Wny? When will this end?
You are much younger than us two - you will carry on.
It's not due to compassion fatigue. I must confess, as I grew into my 70s (I am now 77) I could not find the strength to carry on writing about Gaza and Palestine.
Thinking and feeling and writing for Palestine/Gaza is like breathing with "glass in your lungs". [How one lady described the pain of Covid 19.]
Yesterday, Ros, a good friend I met on this Blog, sent me her Hari Raya greetings and her last two sentences said:
"Hope you're both enjoying your raya fare. But it's difficult to swallow seeing what's happening in Palestine." Ditto Ros, ditto.
Since I started blogging in 2008 - up to 2018 - I have written about 27 postings on Palestine and especially Gaza.
For my readers who are not too familiar with the history and agony of a long-suffering people, I shall try in a couple of postings to compress and summarise the process by which Israel, with the complicity of United Kingdom, USA especially and almost all of the western countries contributed to the emasculation of an ancient, proud and brave people. That did not take a century or so to achieve, just about 73 years since the end of the Second World War.
There were some brave voices like Edward Said, Noam Chomsky, George Galloway, Tariq Ramadan and so many others;and most recently this Irish MP Richard Boyd Barrett (see YouTube below).
I also have the privilege of meeting Chris, the Caucasian-American husband of another good friend Siti, who I met via this Blog. Chris spent much of his adult years as an aid worker in the West Bank, helping, among other things, to teach English to the childen. Chris is now 70-ish and is almost crippled by respiratory problems from all the tear gas he and his pupils were subjected to by the IDF (Israeli Defence Force).
Siti sent me this video at 7 am this morning. Through Siti, I am in touch with our common concerns and interests, issues like Palestine/Gaza and Islamophobia.
A CAVEAT. It is necessary - almost compulsory - that when you embark on any attempt to speak up for the Gazans and Palestinians , you have to declare you are not anti-Semitic. I am not anti-Semitic or anti any one because of their colour or their religion or race. Those like me who criticise Israel - a Goliath state against a 'David' political entity like Palestine/Gaza - for their racist/apartheid policy are not anti-Jew or anti-Semitic. We take up cudgels for the underdog, any underdog, in whatever shape or size, or form or colour.
I have written 27 postings and I cannot find any more words to express my thoughts for Palestine/Gaza without repeating myself. This - at this time of our celebration after fasting in the holy month of Ramadan - is all I can put together. In no way can this shed any hope or light for our fellow Muslims in Gaza. Unlike Chris who puts his money and health where his mouth is, AsH is just a keyboard supporter, albeit after some years of dashing from Leicester to London, a hundred miles away, with the spouse, attending protest marches and meetings in support of Gaza and Palestine and the anti-war movement in the capital. Then; the spirit and the flesh were able and willing. Today, only the fighting (but weary) spirit is left. I have to exchange the streets of London and Leicester for just this keyboard.
All children deserve a happy and secure childhood. I was blessed with that and so did the spouse and all of our extended family in Malaysia and Paekakariki, New Zealand.

The spouse and I are life-long supporters of MAP (Medical Aid For Palestinians). Since 1990, they have been sending us their newsletters and Annual Reports. This came, if my memory serves me well, after the 2008/2009 attack by the IDF.
I wonder if these children managed to grow into adults, unmaimed and healthy. And if they did, I hope they are still alive and keeping up the fight for their homeland.
Many, many yonks ago the newspapers inserted a little competition to promote their sales. It was called Spot the Ball Contest. The picture of a ball had been removed from a photograph of a football match. All you had to do to win a prize was to locate the position of the ball.

In the eyes of the world, Palestinians mean Muslims. Palestinian Muslims are a violent lot of terrorists - like the 16 year old girl Ahed Tamimi who slapped an armed Israeli soldier just last week.
So, on the face of it, a headline like that suggests a certain very predictable chain reaction from the guardians of Christianity? I am thinking of leading lights like ....
Donald Trump - the leader of the Free World, of the world's richest nation.
Charlie Hebdo, the rabidly islamophobic French satirical weekly magazine - this should provide great fodder for their genius to work on.
Imagine the distress suffered by the Pope to see his fellow leader of the flock being hounded by such a rabble

That would certainly be the scenario if one only read the headline. What is the purpose of a newspaper Headline? It is mainly to catch the attention of the readers. It is also supposed to present the gist and the main thrust of the text to follow.
But this headline has failed miserably, whether by commission or omission BECAUSE this is the actual content of the report ......
...... that the "attack" was carried out by Christian Palestinians ( and with justification)!
The missing "ball", the missing word is Christian.
This is not simply a matter of distinguishing a religious denomination. If a Malaysian commits a crime abroadit does not matter if that person is Chinese or Malay or Indian, or Muslim or Christian or Hindu or Buddhist - he is just another Malaysian, albeit a nasty piece of work who has brought shame to the country.

But in Palestine, the cradle of three monotheist religions and a killing field where the powerful perpetrators are labelled the victims (with the collaboration of an omnipotent Big Brother abroad), where blood and tears are cheap especially for the Palestinians - religion matters especially in a world where violence is always attributed to one particular religion; to Islam.
And so the end of another year - the end of 2017, by the Gregorian Calendar. "Gregorian what??" you may ask. There are many simple things in life, like a Calendar, whose history has been taken for granted!!
There are as many types of calendars as there are religions and customs. The Catholic Gregorian Calendar we are using came by courtesy of Christian British Imperialism - for it was adopted by Protestant England only in 1752, and not without protests and dissensions because Protestantism has always been suspicious of the Papacy and Catholicism; not much different from the present disengagement between the Shias and Sunnis.
The present Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory X11 in 1582 mainly so they say, to keep Easter, which is observed on March 21 in sync with the spring equinox, something which the former Julian Calendar (as in Julius Caesar) failed to maintain.
Later in the 19th century, Japan (1873), Egypt (1875) and Korea in 1896 adopted the Gregorian calendar. This was followed by China (1912), USSR (1918), Greece (1923) and Turkey (1926).
More interesting, Saudi Arabia also switched over in October 2016. According to The Independent (Harry Cockburn, 4 October 2016) :
"The country had used the lunar-based Hijri Calendar since the Kingdom was founded in 1932, but has switched to the Gregorian calendar to pay civil servants." As the Hijri calendar has 11 days shorter than the Gregorian 365 days, "the move will mean Saudi civil servants will lose 11 days of payment as salary days are cut. It is one of many belt-tightening measure announced as the country seeks to reduce its high budget deficit".
Certainly we shall not see a clamour in Malaysia to switch to the Hijri calendar!!!
I do not want to be a wet blanket, but what is the relevance and meaning of a "New Year" for many people in many parts of the world. Discounting the annual fat bonuses for the fat cats, the latest revolution in mobile and car technology, the amazing radical changes in choices and of lifestyle for the ordinary folks-in-the-street like .......
........ what's more, 2017 has revealed the mother-of-all sexual predators in the shape of Harvey Weinstein seen here with two of the 21st century's most iconic personalities - Barack Obama and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Barack and Harvey - great political pals, then - to the tune of $600,000 according to UK's Daily Mail.
It's hard to keep in touch with the latest diktat of political correctness and when the former 44th President of the USA (and also the most popular head of state, as ranked in a survey by the International World Leader Index) made this statement about his pal Harvey Weinstein .........

It's all old hat to this septuagenarian. In my time at Singapore University and in the corridors of the teaching profession, we girls were told, mainly by word of mouth, how to get on with getting good marks and special favours from the men-in-charge : from old and young men, ugly men, repulsive men, men of all shades of colour and religion and highly educated men especially. They can be nasty, persuasive and wily so as to get what they want.
But then it works both ways. For the fairer sex, sometimes, all they have to do is to give these predators a dose of manja-manja, feed their ego and more often than not it can bring some reward. Furthermore there are women who have polished this to a fine art to get what they want and some foolish men fall for it, hook line and sinker! But then a bigger harvest will require a great deal of 'investment' on the part of the female.
It all depends on how desperate you are to get ahead and to do so without too much effort. It also depends on how desperate you are to keep your dignity, self-pride and honour.
For women in any part of the world and from any culture who want fame and fortune in what is basically a male domain, this is the oldest game in the world!
I guess I was very fortunate because when I reached puberty, my Abah cautioned and warned me that "men are crocodiles". That really prepared me for the rest of my post-puberty life!!
What can 2018 bring for the ordinary, quiet and decent people of the world? I am thinking especially of the decent and suffering people of Palestine.
What is in store for their children?
More of the same in 2018?
How many more graves have to be dug?
More visits by The Grim Reaper from Israel?
How many more broken and bloody bodies in 2018?
More casualties to be treated in broken-down hospitals (not for the blues, only the reds)
The great and good of the world are mortified by the unequal distribution of wealth on this planet - how a great deal of fortune is held by a small percentage of the population. ( In USA, 1% of families own 38.6% of the country's wealth).
So what can we make of this unequal distribution of deaths in Palestine and Israel. In 2017 there are 8.3 million Israelis and 5 million Palestinians but which country takes the brunt of ending up as the victims, especially among the children of Palestine?

So, roll on 2018. Bring on the life and times of the powerful, the wealthy, the victors and the self-righteous.
Publicise the salacious and the banal.
Keep out and rationalise the violence inflicted by the powerful, and the sufferings and deaths of the powerless.

What have I been up to since arriving in the spouse's kampung 10 days ago?
It has been a leisurely and peaceful stroll, without (well, not as much as in KL) a care - an absolute lenggang kangkung! The spouse had a nasty cough and cold for the last 5 days but he's picking up sans any medication, just a good dose of sleep and rest. As people in Malaysia like to put it - 'no sweat'- literally and figuratively.

I took this photograph just an hour ago, at 5 am. The rest of Leicester is still asleep but AsH treasures such solitary moments.
So, what have I been up to this winter?
1. I gave myself a present - a beautifully embroidered picture of clouds, greenery, apple trees in Spring and the top of a stone wall - sewn by our best friend and master embroiderer Jack Marlowe. Jack is almost 80 and despite his arthriticky fingers, he perseveres with his embroidery and gardening and spoiling his four cats Allegra, Gingerlation, Ichabod and Schtanley.
And, talking about cats - I miss our three cats very, very much - they define our raison d'etre in Kuala Lumpur.

I've got only as far as Page 91 but here's an excerpt from one of the most touching parts of the book (Page 39-40).

It is thanks to his uncle that Muhammad secured his place in Meccan society. ...........He summoned his nephew. "Do not put a burden on me greater than I can bear,' he told Muhammad.. 'Spare me and spare yourself.' Muhammad feared he was about to lose his uncle's protection. With tears in his eyes, he replied: 'By God if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon on my left on condition that I abandon this course, I would not abandon it until God has made me victorious or I perish.' As he turned away from his uncle, Abu Talib called Muhammad back: 'Go and say what you please, for by God I will never give you up on any account.' Abu Talib was not declaring himself a convert. He was a fond uncle accepting the sincerity of his nephew's cry of conscience, no matter how troublesome or disconcerting that might be to the rest of society. And what is the paradox? What Muhammad preached sought to overturn, indeed to replace entirely the ethos and conventions of tribal solidarity. Yet it was this very principle extended and guaranteed by Abu Talib that secured Muhammad's personal safety and hence his ability to continue his mission. Book 3
Yesterday (Tuesday) I made my usual foray into Leicester Animal Rescue (LAR) my favourite charity shop/shopping mall. I noticed this book "The Making of Britain - The Middle Ages" in a box marked '50p' just outside the shop. As I flicked through the pages, I came across page 24 which had the illustrations 'Medieval Islamic scholars at work in a library' and most fascinating of all 'A page from an Arabic translation of Euclid''! It was worth 50p and more.
I took it home, skimmed through the contents, and discovered more.
An eleventh century map of the world. (from page 8). In this map, the Mediterranean is the centre of the land mass and Jerusalem as the çentre of creation'.
This extract from page 9-10 elaborates on this - and provides an interesting facet about the First Crusade:
Intellectually, this view of the world linked medieval scholars to what they had read of classical antiquity, and to the world of St Paul and St Augustine. At the same time it shows us how, to them, Christendom seemed hemmed in by heretics and infidels. It makes us realise why, when Pope Urban II in 1095 called for volunteers from western Europe to go to the help of Christians in the East, it was interpreted as a call to liberate Jerusalem from the clutches of Islam. Yet the odd fact is that when the First Crusade set out, Jerusalem had been in the hands of the Moslems for over four hundred years ......... Crusading zeal for the expulsion of the infidel was something quite new in the eleventh century and it was profoundly shocking to native Christians and Moslems of the Near East who for generations had learned to live together in mutual respect.
Alas, history has a way of repeating itself. And who controls Jerusalem today?

USA, Great Britain, Singapore and Malaysia all claim to be countries run on the principles of democracy. To quote that very over-simplistic saying of Abraham Lincoln, democracy is "Government of the people, by the people, for the people".
A democracy is not ruled by a king or queen , a hereditary aristocracy, a few selected persons, religious elites or any other unelected power group.
USA is a democracy where the President can only get elected to power when he has powerful financial backers to see him through to the White House. But he who pays the piper plays the tune.
Great Britain on the other hand is regarded as the Mother of Parliaments - whose system of parliamentary democracy is inherited by all or most members of her previous empire - of which Malaysia and Singapore are just two. But the ruling class - the politicians and the ministers - are saturated by privately educated, well-heeled Oxbridge graduates. Not only that :

Democracy does not stop the domination of government, business, policing and the legal system, and education in the hands of a particular elite.
Quite interesting is this, the Labour Party (now in the Opposition) started as a party representing the working class and supported by the Trade Unions. But ever since Tony Blair took over in 1997 and created New Labour - "red" Labour became more and more like "blue" Conservative - a party of big business and the wealthy.
And just recently it came to light that Labour, which is haemorrhaging from lack of funds has suffered another financial blow. Because of Labour's anti-Israel stance over Gaza and Palestine her Jewish supporters and financial donors are leaving in droves. Here's a piper who will be losing his tune-maker.
In the case of Singapore there are all the trappings of a democracy but it's a form of democracy made-in-Singapore-for-Singapore only. To replace the old guard - the leaders who were at the birth of the Republic of Singapore wef 1963 - Singapore designed a very Singaporean version of anointing new, younger leaders. This second echelon leadership was appointed and co-opted from the elites in the professions, the Civil Service and the business sectors. They joined the PAP only when they were nominated for a Parliamentary seat.
... Now The Nub of the Matter
All that preamble was for the purpose of expanding on this article I read in Utusan Malaysia a few days ago. There was this young man ......
...... Dr Mohammad Nawar Ariffin, an UMNO delegate from Kedah who urged that Umno needs an injection of quality to revitalise the party's status and strength. These words emanate from the son of unschooled and poor padi farmers - who was given the chance by the government (led by UMNO) to progress from poverty to becoming a paediatrician. He expressed his gratitude for the endeavours of UMNO to help its poor members (like his parents' family) to better themselves.
It must be nice for the old guard in UMNO to listen to this voice of appreciation. But they must take more seriously Dr Mohammad Nawar's advice (warning?) that "antara kriteria kualiti yang UMNO perlukan adalah integriti, bekerja dengan teliti, bekerja untuk capai tahap prestasi tinggi, hubungan dua hala antara pemimpin dan ahli serta kerja ikhlas dari hati".
There are three key words, integriti, teliti and ikhlas - very crucial requirements for future UMNO leaders and followers who are truly budiman.
UMNO must listen to such young voices (and many others like him) and give them space and opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the nation and the Malays.
UMNO must choose its future leaders from the likes of Dr Mohammad Nawar Ariffin - young Malays with dedication and ability - and not merely rely on hereditary appointments and old-boy UMNO network.
In the past few months, news coming from Malaysia has got me sick up to the eyeballs. Evangelist Brazilian football, the pathetic circus over "I Want to Touch a Dog", and revelations about stains on carpets and of body fluids during the Sodomy Trial are enough to make you weep. And as for the recent brouhaha over the bangang and the stupid - well, they will always be with the Malays, where ever and who ever they are.
Thank goodness, I have discovered a piece of hopeful news in Dr Mohammad Nawar Ariffin - not simply because he's an UMNO man. It's because this old lady can see in him a glimmer of my father's 'fire in the belly' when he organised an UMNO meeting in Kampung Abu Kassim in Singapore in 1952

I hope Dr Mohammad Nawar will carry on the torch of the early founders and leaders of UMNO and that the dinosaurs and fat cats and opportunists and cronies in today's UMNO will realise that the survival of the party and the Malays depends on young blood like the delegate from Kedah.
Speaking in the Argentine Weekly "Viva" this week ( which was also the second(?) or third (?) week of the massacre in Gaza) Pope Francis shared with the world his recipe for happiness.

For the past month or so, there should be a warning sign about watching TV while eating. You may just about throw out your stomach contents if you are confronted with this.
5. Sundays should be holidays. Sunday is for family.
As for the families of these children, there will be no dinners on Sunday or Monday or Tuesday etc, etc only grief and heartache.
As for this Rabbi, he has chosen which children do not deserve the Pope's vision of a family Sunday.
6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people.
Young Palestinians will not face unemployment problems because they have been culled by the Zionists. For those who survive, there won't be problems like 'drug addiction' and 'suicide' which was referred to by the Pope. They just live in abject poverty and fear and degradation.
Perhaps the Pope was thinking of young people in United Kingdom, a nation who are great friends of Israel. Their young people have no worries over their tomorrows.
7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation " is one of the biggest challenges we have."
Often on my trips to New Zealand to visit the spouse's relatives, I have to endure questions or comments about how terrible Malaysia is with regards to deforestation and environmental vandalism. But when I observe how treeless NZ is - and how sheep are more populous than humans, I reckon they take the prize for hypocrisy when it comes to deforestation.
According to the above article, one small burn-off of forest on the east coast of North Island, in the 1900s, destroyed 30,000 acres of indigenous forest. We are rapped on the knuckles for cutting the forests for oil palm, the Kiwis do it for sheep. We are regarded as vandals when the slash and burn technique is used for forest clearance. Well, the Kiwis did it many, many years ago as from the 1900s because they found this technique low-cost and efficient. According to the same article " the rate of forest loss in NZ is the highest in the world." So, 'goosey-goosey gander, whither shall you wander? Upstairs and downstairs in the master's chamber.'

Long, long ago Christian missionaries came on the coat-tails of Western Imperialism to convert heathens, but especially Muslims to Catholicism and later Protestantism.
